When can we get rid of Mumble?

Mumble is terrible, Discord is much much better.

Can we move, please?

Thanks,

Brian Walters

Before I came to mumble I used Discord heavily, and I still do, I even maintain a server on it. Brian is right, Times are changing and with improved audio encoders and new features such as file sharing and screen sharing it really makes sense to switch, However, mumble is very well known for its security, but it costs money if I'm not mistaken... So really when you look at it Discord not only has a better audio encoder but it has many MANY features, So is discord the better choice?

Yes.

Three things. Firstly, if its not broke then don't fix it. Secondly, if you don't like mumble then no ones stopping you from moving on to discord exclusively. And thirdly, you do realise we're using a Descent Rangers mumble channel, NOT A DESCENT CHAMPIONS LADDER MUMBLE CHANNEL.

You've given some good reasons why moving to discord would be the right choice for you but not necessarily for everyone else. Try not to mix the two in future as you'll often find they aren't mutually inclusive.

The Rangers trialled Discord some time ago (that's why the Descent server on there is on there) and decided not to migrate for a couple reasons that I can recall - first was that... I think it was missing some management stuff or something... and the second was that we have a few members who can't use it (old PC syndrome).

That doesn't mean I'm discouraging its use, though. Plenty of things I'd rather do there myself.

One of the things that's really a pain with Discord is that you can't have people using voice and people using text in the same channel. Think how often that happens in Mumble right now, with people who don't have mics or just don't like talking. Sure, they can be in the voice channel listening, and type into a separate text channel, and everyone else can be watching that channel and typing back, but that's just annoying. Discord works okay for Obs, but that's because nobody ever uses the voice channels (apart from The Booth).

Setting up private conversations is rough too. If I don't want my messages to persist for everyone else to see, I have to (a) pester an admin to make a locked channel and take it down when I'm done, or (b) create a new Discord group for every single conversation. Contrast with Mumble where conversation history isn't stored to begin with, and anyone can actually make a password-protected temporary lobby in five seconds if they want serious privacy.

Also yeah, I like having free RAM on my computer for, like, descent and stuff.

The only reason I use mumble is because everyone else is on it. I wouldn't use it otherwise. It wouldn't be a good idea if I moved to discord by myself. Everyone needs to agree to move.

Discord has browser options, couldn't you use that on old pcs?

Discord is flexible, easy to share, tons of features. Everything that Mumble isn't.

Can the descent community at least think about the benefits of moving to a better platform?

What does Mumble have that discord doesnt? What draws us to it rather than discord?

I vote for a move

I don't mind staying with Mumble, but I think there are tons of other options to use.
