Challenges should be quite public for the weight they carry. I think they should be mentioned in a one liner. Scrolling feed seems tacky, but may be effective.

Make it an expando-box like the promo challenges! "There are currently 6 challenges!" or something like that, and you click it and it lists them. Better design (AKA no scrolling!) AND gives the information you want.
